Transfer Domain

A domain name transfer is what happens when the registrar of the domain name gets changed. A domain name registrar is a company accredited to manage reservations/transfers of Internet domain names observing some guidelines and rules.

In short a domain name transfer is: changing the company that you registered the domain name with, while the owner of the domain name (you) stays the same. The only person who may initiate and finish a domain name transfer is the sole owner of the domain name. Read below what are the requirements to transfer a domain name.

The Domain Transfer Process:

  1. Check that the domain name's administrative contact email address is correct, that the domain name is unlocked and available for transfer, and that you have requested and entered the required authorization code for each domain name you wish to transfer. Note: All Domain Name Server (DNS) changes must be completed before you request a transfer to Network Solutions®. Changes cannot be made to the domain name server while the transfer is in process.
  2. Network Solutions® sends an email to the administrative contact of the domain to confirm the transfer. The administrator will confirm and approve the transfer via a link in the email, which notifies the losing registrar to transfer the domain to Network Solutions. The losing registrar releases the domain to Network Solutions and sends an email to the administrative contact confirming that the domain has been successfully transferred.
  3. You can now manage your domain through Network Solutions account management online application.

The Domain Transfer Timeline:

  • Domain transfers are usually completed within 5 to 7 days from the date of the initial transfer request. In order to speed up the domain transfer process, the administrative contact should ensure that the domain is unlocked at their current registrar and should respond with a confirmation to the email immediately upon receipt.
  • The administrative contact has up to 14 days to authorize the transfer from the receipt of the original email. Please note that if the transfer email is not confirmed during this time period, the transfer will fail. You will receive another email once the transfer is successful. You may then begin managing the domain(s) in your Network Solutions account.
